Welcome to the Opsani team, Amir!

What background and experience do you bring with you?

I started out as an engineer back in the late 90s and progressively became more interested in product management and the business of technology. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to have worked in some of the more successful and larger companies in the Valley, namely Sun Microsystems and VMware.  That experience is coupled with work at successful startups, namely Topspin Communications and Aporeto. 

I was a product manager when I joined Topspin, a company founded by Ross Schibler, who is also Opsani’s founder. And I was the founder of Aporeto. Both Topspin and Aporeto exited successfully, with the two companies being acquired by Cisco and Palo Alto Networks respectively.

Quite the resume. Why are you excited to have joined Opsani?

In all cases where I have worked for successful companies, there were two unifying themes: Differentiated technology and amazing people. Differentiated technology allowed each of my companies to create valuable products for the market and give customers advantages over their competitors. But, ultimately, it was the amazing people in each company that brought successful products to the market. It was the people that made the technology into compelling products that the customers loved.

Opsani stands out for precisely the same reasons: Differentiated technology and amazing people. From what I have observed directly, Opsani’s customers get incredible value; that value creation is a testament to the quality of people in the company.

On that differentiated technology: How would you explain what Opsani does to a total tech noob?

Opsani’s value proposition is simple: The company enables its customers to get the biggest bang out of the bucks they are spending on their cloud software stack. 

Let’s face it: Cloud software development is complex. Over the years, the collective we have layer upon layer of abstraction to help simplify the process of delivering software services over the internet. But, as we have built these layers of abstraction, we have both created more complexity while masking it. In other words, the stack is way to complex for the human mind to comprehend.

Luckily, recent and rapid advances in ML can help us solve this problem. This is where Opsani comes in. Using ML techniques, Opsani analyses the operations of our customers’ cloud software stacks and proposes the most optimal configuration for each stack.  The result is better performance at a lower cost, or a bigger bang for the buck, if you will. Continuous Optimization. 

What excites/interests/enthuses you about Continuous Optimization as a practice?

Continuous Optimization (CO) is an exciting new category because of how well it complements existing CI-CD practices. Companies have adopted CI-CD for faster SW delivery. Adoption of distributed architectures and microservices underpin the CI-CD premise. However, as delivery gets faster, software becomes more distributed, and services get more decoupled, complexity starts to creep into the picture. CO is the perfect complement to CI-CD as it keeps performance at the top of the chart while keeping costs under control. CO enables good housekeeping. In some ways, CO is to CI-CD what Jarvis is to Ironman.

What do you see as your key goals at Opsani over the next three quarters or so?

My goal is to work with Opsani’s leadership to deliver the best possible products in a way that is easy to digest by our customers. Our goal is to add value quickly and as painlessly as possible. Within that mission, customers can expect a lot of helpful content and tools coming from Opsani over the next few quarters.

How do you think your previous experiences in different companies will help you achieve these goals?

I have had the opportunity to work in multiple disciplines in my career: Engineering, product management, and GTM. And, as a founder of a successful startup, I have learned a thing or two about what moves the needle for our customers, the market, and our customers. My goal is to work with Opsani’s amazing people and continue to move the needle to help our customers get the best possible performance out of their software stack with the lowest possible costs.

Finally: What are your favorite things about Opsani’s team and work culture?

Opsani has a tight team culture. In many ways, it behaves like a family. Trust bonds, both inside the company and outside with our customers, are strong. Having done my own startup before, I know the value of working closely together in the trenches and with our customers to deliver the best possible value and products. Tighter bonds between people create better products and happier customers.
